Matt Garin Gets Visit from Gopher Coaches

Matt Garin, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound junior defensive end from Apple Valley (MN) Eastview who recently picked up a scholarship offer from Minnesota, received an in-school visit from Gopher defensive coordinator Ted Roof and defensive line coach Tim Cross Monday. Garin has picked up 11 Division I offers to date. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Dave to learn the latest on his son's recruitment.

Matt Garin was named Associated Press second-team after leading the Lightning to the Prep Bowl semifinals and an 11-2 mark. Garin was the team's leading tackler from the defensive end position.

Garin's father, Dave, played high school football at Bloomington Kennedy. He played at St. Thomas University, Normandale Community College and UNLV.

Matt Garin has scholarship offers from Washington State, Oregon State, Air Force, Stanford, Western Michigan, Colorado, Arizona State, Minnesota and Boise State and most recently West Virginia. He is getting interest from Mississippi and Indiana.

Dave said that his son has picked up new interest from another Big Ten school.

"Northwestern is talking to him," Dave said.

Gopher defensive coordinator Ted Roof and defensive line coach Tim Cross stopped by Eastview Monday, according to Dave.

"He is starting to feel more comfortable with them," he said.

Stanford and Northwestern also stopped by the school this week.

Matt plans to take the SAT on the 14th and will visit five schools later this month.

"He is going to go to Colorado, Arizona State, West Virginia, Stanford and Boise State," his father said.

Dave said that Minnesota is the only camp that Matt is planning on attending so far.

Garin also played on the Eastview lacrosse team that advanced to the state semifinals.

Eastview has produced Gophers football players John Shevlin, Ryan Ruckdashel and Jason Meinke.
