Matt Garin Hopes to Make Decision Soon

Matt Garin, a 6-foot-4, 227-pound senior defensive end from Apple Valley (MN) Eastview who has a scholarship offer from Minnesota, had a full range of flexibility in his knee after recently having his it scoped and cartilage taken out. GoldenSports.Net talked to Garin's father, Dave, to learn the latest on his recruitment and timeline for making his college choice.

Matt Garin was named Associated Press second-team after leading the Lightning to the Prep Bowl semifinals and an 11-2 mark. Garin was the team's leading tackler from the defensive end position.

Garin's father, Dave, played high school football at Bloomington Kennedy. He played at St. Thomas University, Normandale Community College and UNLV.

Garin has scholarship offers from Washington State, Oregon State, Air Force, Stanford, Western Michigan, Colorado, Arizona State, Minnesota and Boise State and West Virginia. He is getting interest from Mississippi and Indiana. The Hoosiers have indicated that they will offer Garin, if he takes a visit.

Dave Garin told GoldenSports.Net that he and his son recently visited Colorado and has other vists set up.

"We are planning to go to Arizona State and Boise State in the next week and try to hit them both," Dave said.

UCLA is reportedly close to extending an offer and Garin said that they could take a West Coast visit.

"We might go to Stanford and UCLA, if they offer, the next week."

Garin had hoped to make his college choice before the end of the season, but his father said that they might have to wait to make his college choice.

"He would like to make a decision hopefully before the season starts," he said. "However, many of the coaches are gone in the end of July, so we haven't been able to see the guys, which has messed with our plan. He may have to do one or two official visits.

Garin said that his son's relationship with Minnesota verbal commit quarterback Moses Alipate has the Gophers in a good position. The two have talked about rooming together at Minnesota, if Garin commits to the Gophers.

"It is huge (their relationship). The two have a lot in common," Dave said. "They hang out once in awhile. He (Moses) works him pretty good."

Eastview starts practice August 5th and will play in the Minnetonka scrimmage. The Lightning open the season against Lake Conference foe Burnsville Aug. 30.

Garin also played on the Eastview lacrosse team that advanced to the state semifinals.

Garin is an excellent student with a 3.49 GPA and a 23 ACT score.

Eastview has produced Gophers football players John Shevlin, Ryan Ruckdashel and Jason Meinke.
