TN Forward Drew Kelly Has Big Ten Interest

Drew Kelly, a 6-foot-7 forward from Franklin (TN) Centennial, is one of the country's top two-sport athletes. Kelly has three scholarship offers from football and has gotten recruiting interest from several programs, including Big Ten schools Minnesota and Iowa. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Kelly, who was playing in the adidas Supper 64 in Las Vegas, to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Drew Kelly is getting plenty of attention on the hardwood.

"I'm hearing from Iowa, Western Kentucky and Minnesota," he said. "I have offers from Southern Illinois, Miami of Ohio, Morehead State, Murray, State and Belmont. I'm hearing a little from Tennessee and Kentucky."

Kelly comes from a basketball family. His grandfather, Lake Kelly, was an assistant coach for Kentucky during a national championship season. He was an assistant at Austin Peay, when they upset Illinois in the NCAA Tournament and was a head coach for the Governors and Oral Roberts.

"He is retired now and is an assistant principal at a elementary school, but he taught me how to shoot," Drew said.

Kelly said that he would have already made his college choice, if it had not been for a coaching change.

Western Kentucky offered when head coach Darrin Horn was there. I was going to commit. I loved Coach Horn and the whole staff. I have not heard as much from the new staff."

Kelly is also getting interest as a tight end on the football field.

"Memphis, Louisville and Vanderbilt have offered and I am hearing from Tennessee," he said.

Kelly said that most schools have talked about redshirting him as a freshman, if he decided to play football.

"They want me to put weight on and if I keep my speed, I'll play tight end, if not I'll move to offensive line," he said.

The pounding of football doesn't overly appeal to Kelly.

"I definitely want to play basketball."

Minnesota had shown early interest in Kelly, but he has not heard as much from the Gophers recently. Minnesota has just two available scholarships.

"I got a few calls in the spring, but I have not talked to them this summer," he said. "I'm getting e-mails and letters."

Kelly said that two schools have emerged as favorites on his list.

"I'm open, but I really like Southern Illinois and Miami of Ohio," he said. "I plan to visit Miami of Ohio, Southern Illinois and Iowa. I have family in Morehead, so I have been to the school."
