Big Ten Has Five Teams in FB Top-25 Poll

With the college football season less than a month away, the Big Ten was well-represented in the preseason USA Today Coaches' Poll, with five programs appearing among the top 25, equaling the Big 12 and the SEC for the lead among all conferences. Ohio State topped the Big Ten at No. 3 nationally, followed by No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 19 Illinois, No. 22 Penn State and No. 24 Michigan.

The Ohio State Buckeyes tied for second among all teams with 14 first-place votes to rank third in the preseason coaches' poll behind No. 1 Georgia (22 first-place votes) and No. 2 Southern California (14). Ohio State will face the second-ranked Trojans on Sept. 13 and is aiming for a fourth straight Big Ten title this season. OSU was chosen as the conference's preseason favorite by media members attending the Big Ten football media days in July, followed by the Wisconsin Badgers and Illinois Illini.

Wisconsin enters the 2008 campaign ranked 12th nationally and has played in four consecutive January bowl games, a total that ranks third behind only Southern California and West Virginia. Illinois was rated 19th after compiling nine wins for the first time since 2001 and making its first Rose Bowl appearance since 1984. The Nittany Lions were tabbed 22nd after ending last season with a triumph over Texas A&M in the Valero Alamo Bowl. The Michigan Wolverines will begin their first season under new head coach Rich Rodriguez ranked 24th overall. Michigan State also received votes in the initial poll.

The 113th season of Big Ten football kicks off Saturday, Aug. 30th with 10 teams in nationally televised action, broadcast either on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 or the Big Ten Network.
