Cole Jirik Talks About His Recruitment

Cole Jirik, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound defensive end for Northfield (MN) High, is one of Minnesota's top defensive players. Jirik attended the Minnesota season opener versus Northern Illinois and the Gophers have asked Jirik about walking on next year. He was named to the KARE 11 preseason all-Metro Team. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Jirik recently to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Cole Jirik led the Raiders to a 4-5 mark as a junior and he was named second-team Associated Press All-State. He finished with 68 tackles and led the state with 16 sacks. Jirik has added two fumble recoveries and a blocked field goal.

What is the latest on your recruitment?

"I've got an offer from Western Michigan right now. Air Force has been talking to me and it sounds like they are going to offer me. Buffalo has been showing me some more interest and I am hearing from North Dakota State."

What are you hearing from Minnesota?

"They like my size and stuff and they like my speed. They have a lot of players and they are not taking many at my position, so it will be tough, but we'll see what happens."

What are your expectations for Northfield this season?

"I think that we have a really good chance at state this year. We have some inexperience, but once we learn, we should be one of the top team in 4A."

You are playing tight end as well as on defense?

"I'm playing both ways. I pretty much played the whole game until I get tired and have to come out for a couple of plays. I was pretty much in the whole time. I had a few catches in the opener. It gets a little tiring. I only come out for special teams, but that is what conditioning is for, to get ready. I don't like coming off the field. I like being out there all the time and having a chance to make a play everytime."

Jirik attended the Minnesota spring practice and was at several Minnesota home games this past season. He attended the Minnesota, Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois junior days and went to the Northern Iowa spring game.

Jirik visited North Dakota State in the spring and attends nine football camps this summer.

Jirik is a three-sport athlete, playing hockey and summer baseball. He helped lead his VFW baseball team's trip to state in 2007.

"We love the fact that he's a three-sport athlete," Northfield Bubba Sullivan recently told the Northfield News. "It benefits him because he's competing all the time. A lot of kids get nervous before the big game, but he gets excited for it and looks forward to it."
