Chad Calcaterra Talks About His Recruitment

Chad Calcaterra, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound junior forward from Cloquet, attended Saturday's Minnesota-Montana State football game this past weekend. Calcaterra received a scholarship offer from Minnesota before his sophomore year. Calcaterra was hampered this past season, with a stress fracture in his foot. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Calcaterra to learn the latest.

Calcaterra attended the Gophers' Midnight Madness and several games and GoldenSports.Net talked to him at the Minnesota football game to learn the latest on his recruitment.

What schools have come in for open gyms?

"Colorado State came Friday and that was pretty fun. Tuesday, North Carolina State is going to be coming. From there, I really don't know."

You went to Chicago last weekend for an exposure camp and the North Dakota State Junior Elite Camp the previous weekend. What things have you been working on to improve as a player?

"I've actually been working with a trainer now. He is building up my core. I feel that if I want to become a better player, I need to build up that core a lot more. I have been really pounding the weights and trying to get better. I have actually went up about 10 pounds."

What are your expectations for your team this year?

"The team that we have right now, all my best friends are on there. I have a whole bunch of friends on the team. This is my junior year and we have a whole lot of players coming back for a change. I feel that we are going to have a really tough team and lots of teamwork and that can carry us."

Is your team playing in any fall leagues?

"Our team is not playing in any fall leagues. Another player on our team and I are going to be playing for Columbia Heights. I'll be playing in the Twin Cities."

What offers do you have right now?

"Minnesota, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Colorado and Colorado State."

What others schools are you hearing from?

"I just got a letter a couple of weeks ago from Stanford. I got a letter from N.C. State. Other than that, it has been the same schools lately. Marquette has been sending me a lot of stuff.

Calcaterra attended the adidas Phenoms Camp July 10-13 and traveled with the Minnesota Magic to the NY2LA Sports Next Level Invitational at Homestead High School in Mequon, Wis., July 6-9, the AAU 16U Super Showcase at Disney's Wide World of Sports Milk House Complex in Kissimmee, Fla., July 22-24 and the AAU 16U Division I National Championship at the Josten Center in Kissimmee July 25-30.

His father, John, is an Upper Michigan native who played basketball at Mesabi Community College and walked on at Northern Michigan, where an assistant named Tom Izzo was on staff.
