Zach Mottla Gets Minnesota Interest

Zach Mottla, a 6-foot-2, 270-pound center from St. Paul (MN) Cretin Derham Hall, attended the Minnesota-Indiana game this weekend. Mottla helped lead the Raiders to the 2007 Prep Bowl, losing to Eden Prairie in title game, and they are off to a 6-0 start this year. GoldenSports.Net recently caught up with Mottla to find the latest on his recruitment.

Zach Mottla is considered one of the top linemen in the state this season. Mottla has a 3.7 GPA, bench presses 315 pounds and squats 425 pounds.

What is the latest on your recruitment?

"Right now, it is still the same. I still have an offer from the Air Force. Some interest from Iowa. The U (Minnesota) has picked up recently. That is where I am at right now. I have a preferred walk-on from Boston College, so that is pretty much where I am standing right now."

Have the Gophers talked to you about walking-on as well?

"I'm not sure yet. Still waiting to see what happens."

Have you been to many college games this fall?

"I went down to Iowa last weekend for their homecoming game against Northwestern. I've been to about three Gopher games. That's about it so far."

What camps did you get a chance to go to this summer?

"I went out to Iowa State, Iowa, Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania."

Have you had a chance to talk to any of the former Cretin players at Minnesota?

"I talked to some of them. They are real happy here. They are being successful. Shady is having a great time. He is doing great. They are all happy here."

How about your team? You are off to a great start at 6-0, despite not having the big names like last year in Michael Floyd and Shady Salamon.

"We have a lot of good guys. Our defense is great. Our offense does a great job. We have a great O-line up front. We don't have the big-name players, but we always manage to get it done. We just got a good group of guys."

What are your expectations for the rest of the year?

"My expectation is to make it back to the Dome again and that's that. Anything else will just be a disappointment for me."
