Trevor Mbakwe makes Minnesota Visit

Trevor Mbakwe, a 6-foot-7 sophomore forward from Miami-Dade (FL) CC, is visiting Minnesota this weekend for Tubby's Tip-Off. Mbakwe, who played high school basketball at Henry Sibley and St. Bernard's, transferred from Marquette where he played as a freshman. GoldenSports,Net caught up with Mbakwe to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Trevor Mbakwe was expected to be a key contributor last season as a freshman, but was declared out for the year after suffering a knee injury in practice. He underwent surgery on Nov. 9 but on Feb. 15 was declared fit to play and decided to take part in the final portion of the Golden Eagles' schedule rather than sit out the rest of the season as a redshirt. He played in 10 games, averaging 1.7 points and 2.3 rebounds per game as a reserve.

Mbakwe, who had a 2.9 GPA at Marquette, is getting interest from Miami, Alabama, LSU and Minnesota, according to Miami-Dade head coach Matt Eisele.

How is the visit going so far?

"So far, so well. I got here around four or five. I talked to coach Smith a little bit. I went out to eat with some of the players and came here. Everything is going well so far."

When did they offer you a scholarship?

"They offered me a scholarship like a month and a half ago. Coach Smith has been down twice so far. I've gotten to meet with me and I got a good relationship with him so far. It has been nice."

What schools have been down to see you so far?

"LSU, Alabama, Baylor, Miami. There has been a lot of schools down. Memphis has been down. We have a really good team. We have about six guys who are going to go high Division I and play. I am looking forward to the season"

You have two teammates who are going to Memphis next year, a transfer from Alabama, a transfer from Eastern Kentucky and yourself. You are going to have a good team.

"We are going to be top three team. Top five for sure. Juco is all new to me. It is going to be a learning experience. It's still winning. Winning is winning."

The talk is that you want to come back here. Is that the way you are leaning?

"I am just enjoying my recruitment. I am not in a rush to make any decision. I just came out of Marquette. This is my last chance. I am just going to get the best opportunity or the best situation out there for me."

Have you thought about when you might sign? In the early period or late?

"It all depends on comfortability with the coaches and the system. If I feel comfortable enough to sign with a school early, I'll sign early. If not, I'll sign late."

Have you thought about taking any other visits after Minnesota?

"I'm not sure. Our season starts in a another week or so, so I was able to fit this visit in now. I might one more visit or just wait until the spring time."
