Taylor Lewan Leads Chaparral To State Semis

Taylor Lewan, a 6-foot-6, 265-pound offensive lineman from Scottsdale (AZ) Chaparral, made his official visit to Minnesota Saturday. Lewan attended the Minnesota football camp in June and the team's Junior Day in January. Lewan has led Chaparral to the state semifinals and will face Tuscon Canyon Del Oro Saturday. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Lewan to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Taylor Lewan played defensive tackle as a sophomore and junior, but was moved to offensive tackle this season. His team entered the state semifinals at 11-1 after defeating Ceinega 35-21 Friday night.

Lewan, who transferred from Catcus Shadows, shined at the Scout.com/Under Armor Combine in Phoenix this summer. He ran a 4.72 40-yard dash, had 7.60 in the three-cone drill and went 8-foot-11 in the broad jump, which were all tops for offensive linemen at the combine. Lewan was measured at 6-foot-6 and 265 and had a 26 1/2-inch no-step vertical at the camp. Lewan bench presses 315 pounds and squats 455 pounds.

Lewan is expected to visit Michigan and Oregon, depending on his playoff schedule, according to his father Dave. Ohio State and Alabama are looking at another offensive lineman prospect, but could look towards Lewan if they fail to land another player. Georgia is another school that it has shown interest.

"They had a coach at his game when they traveled out to Arizona State in the beginning on the year," Dave said.

Dave told GoldenSports.Net this summer that the Gophers had the slight lead for his son.

"His favorite is Minnesota because of me going here. He liked it here when we visited. He liked it in January when it was 15 below," Dave said.

In fact, when talking to Dave and Taylor at the Gopher game, Dave asked his son when I had first met them and Taylor quickly responded January 20th. This could be a good sign for the Gophers.

Dave attended Minnesota from 1982-87, but saw his football career cut short after undergoing lung surgery after his sophomore year. He spent time growing up in Edina before attending high school in Canada. Dave said that he grew up going to games at Memorial Stadium, only to arrive at Minnesota the first year that they played in the Metrodome.

Ironically, Taylor would get a chance to play in the new TCF Stadium if he decides to become a Gopher.
