Tom Olson Gets Recruiting Attention

Tom Olson, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound right guard from Mahtomedi, comes from a football family. His father, Ed, played for Minnesota from 1980-82 and older brother Ed Jr. has committed to the Gophers. The younger Olson helped form one of the state's top offensive lines as they opened holes for All-State running back Stephen Johnson. GoldenSports.Net recently caught up with Olson to learn the latest.

Tom Olson helped lead the Zephyrs to a 5-7 mark, losing to Northfield 21-13 in the state quarterfinals. The record is misleading as they had to forfeit five games due to using an ineligible player.

Olson was a freshman starter as Mahtomedi finished 10-4, losing to Totino-Grace 13-8 on the last play of the game.

Olson admits that he has already given thought to what football camps he might attend next summer.

"I'm definitely going to come to the one-day here," he said, referring to Minnesota. "I'll probably just go around the Big Ten, maybe Colorado and Nebraska. Pretty much, all around the Midwest."

Olson is hearing from many of those Midwest schools.

"A lot of the Big Ten. I sent my film out of all of them last year. I'm making a new film and sending that out in the next week or two," he said.

It is likely that many schools figure that he will follow in the footsteps of his brother and dad and play at Minnesota. While Olson admits that Minnesota is strong amnog his schools, it is not a foregone conclusion that he will end up there.

"Oh, yeah. The Gophers are always going be there, but I would not mind going to a different school or anything," he said. "My options are open."

However, he admits that playing close to home has its advantages.

"There are a lot of ties with my brother and my dad. It would be great to go anywhere, but Minnesota would be really cool, too," he said.
