Trevor Mbakwe Leads Miami Dade

Trevor Mbakwe, a 6-foot-8 forward from Miami-Dade (FL) CC who signed with Minnesota in the early signing period, has helped lead the Sharks to a 22-2 start and a #5 ranking in the latest NJCAA poll. The Sharks face Indian Rivers State (18-6) Monday night. The Sharks lost to #1 Chipola 84-64 and had to forfeit a win over Florida CC of Jacksonville. They will likely move up to #3 in Tuesday's poll.

Trevor Mbakwe scored a team-high 25 points to lead Miami Dade to a 88-85 road win over Palm Beach (10-16) to open a three-game lead in the Southern Conference. The win was its 12th victory in a row.

Trevor Mbakwe is averaging 14.1 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.3 blocked shots per game this season. He is shooting 62.4% from the field and 66.4% from the line. He has gone to the charity stripe 146 times in 18 games. Mbakwe is eighth in the country in blocked shots and fourth in rebounding.

Mbakwe is one of four double-figure scorers for the Sharks. Memphis signee Darnell Dodson and Alabama transfer Rico Puckett are averaging 16.2 points per game. Sophomore guard James Beatty is averaging 13.2 points per game and Memphis signee William Coleman is adding 11.0 points per contest.

Miami-Dade is in the same region (8) as #1 Chipola and would have to get past the Indiana, if they hope to advance to the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas in March.
