Minnesota Connections on Kirkegaard's Radar

The Gophers made an impression on an Arizona quarterback with their Insight Bowl appearance, so Colby Kirkegaard is keeping Minnesota as one of his top college options. GoldenSports.net talked with the QB on the Gophers' radar and got his impressions.

Playing in the Insight Bowl last December brought Minnesota some western exposure. Colby Kirkegaard, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound pro-style quarterback out of Arcadia High School in Phoenix, Ariz., noticed this and he liked the idea of possibly being a Gopher one day. Although he doesn't have any offers yet, he has recently been considering what Junior Days he might attend.

"I have been invited to Junior Days at Arizona State University, Alabama, and UCLA," he said.

He also has an invitation to sit in on some practices at California-Berkeley. Colby took three unofficial visits last year to Minnesota, Colorado and Stanford.

His experience in Minnesota was a good one. When asked what his early favorites were, he said, "I was definitely really impressed with Minnesota and Colorado."

Facilities, academics and student life top his list of priorities for a future college.

"I saw the new stadium, which looks awesome, and I was blown away by Dinkytown," Kirkegaard said.

Colby's high school runs a wing-T offense but he dreams about the passing game.

"Every quarterback wants to have it spread out and pass a bunch," he said, but his scrambling abilities are also an asset. "I try to buy myself time with my scrambling, but I do have a pretty strong arm. If it comes down to me having to run to get the first down I don't think I would have a problem with that."

Colby's mother grew up in Minnesota and attended the University of Minnesota. Even though the weather would be far different that what he currently experiences in Arizona, he can look past that and focus on the advantages.

"It would be a neat experience to play in Minnesota because I have so much family up there," he said.

And there is another Minnesota connection. The quarterback coach that Colby works with several times a week also has ties to the recruiting coordinator at the University of Minnesota.

Kirkegaard had 14 touchdowns and 1,655 yards last season as a junior.
