Ex-Gopher Damien White killed in Los Angeles

Damien White, a Minnesota wide receiver who signed with the Gophers in February of 2007 but left the program last season, was shot to death early Sunday morning in South Los Angeles. Officers found the body of 19-year-old Damien White in his car. Officers said the wide receiver was shot in the head shortly after 1 a.m. after he left a party. GoldenSports.Net expresses our prayers for the family.

Damien White signed with Minnesota after a standout career at Culver City (CA) High. Friends and family gathered for a candlelight vigil at Culver City Sunday evening to remember the former football star.

White had returned to the Los Angeles area to continue playing football at El Camino College in Torrance. He left Minnesota before the 2008 season.

Police are looking into whether or not the shooting was gang related. However, people close to the player said he was never in a gang. His former coach said White was easy to get along with and described him as a "great kid."
