Andy Jirik Gets Recruiting Interest

Andy Jirik, a 6-foot-6 junior tight end/defensive end from Richfield (MN) Academy of Holy Angels, has started to gain recruiting interest. Jirik also plays basketball for the Stars. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Jirik this weekend at the Minnesota Pump N Run Spring Showcase to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Andy Jirik had 38 tackles, eleven solo and 27 assists for the Stars, who finished 2-7 in the competitive Missota Conference, losing to Minneapolis Washburn in the first round of the Class AAAA, Section 3 Football playoffs.

Jirik averaged 6.6 points per game for the Stars, who finished 9-20 this season, losing to Minneapolis Washburn 63-52 in the Class 3A, Section 6 finals. Holy Angels were 3-16 at one time, but their surprising postseason run. Jirik was named honorable mention All-Missota Conference.

GoldenSports.Net caught up with Jirik Sunday to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Have you been to many Junior Days yet?

"I have not been to any Junior Days. I got invited to a couple. I got invited to North Dakota State, Minnesota, Northern Illinois and a couple other ones."

Are you going to go to any football camps this summer?

"Actually, I just got a call from a guy. I am going to a combine that is at Game Speed. I might go the the Midwest Combine. Me and a couple of other kids from my school are thinking about going to six or seven camps over the summer."

What about your expectations for the upcoming season. I know that you had a bit of a disappointing season last year based on your team's standards.

"I think that we will definitely be improved. We will be a lot more experienced this season. We will definitely get a couple of more wins."

What positions are schools looking at you as playing in college?

"Defensive end."

Are you going to play both sides of the field this season?

"I don't have the best hands, but I am going to try to play tight end. "

How is basketball going so far AAU-wise?

This is my first year with this team. We are all just getting together. We are struggling to get together, but we will turn it around. We are pretty good."
