Branden Dawson Atracts Recruiting Looks

Branden Dawson, a 6-foot-5, 185-pound sophomore from Gary Lew Wallace is one of the Midwest's top players in the Class of 2011. Dawson shined at the Sabes Invitational last weekend as a member of the SYF Players, scoring 28 points in their quarterfinal win over All-Iowa Attack Red and 22 versus K.C. Pump N Run in their semifinal loss. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Dawson to learn the latest.

Branden Dawson made a name for himself last year as a freshman as he scored 16 points and grabbed 13 rebounds against Wirt in the Class 3A Roosevelt Sectional semifinals. Dawson led the Hornets to a 14-7 mark as he averaged 15.5 points, 14.4 rebounds and 4.5 blocked shots per game. He shot 62.4% from the field and 55.4% from the line. Dawson had 32 points and 15 rebounds in their season ending 95-84 loss to Roosevelt in the Hammond Sectionals.

Dawson has already received a scholarship offer from in-state schools, Indiana and Purdue, and is getting plenty of recruiting interest.

What college ate you starting to hear from right now?

Indiana, Purdue, North Carolina, Minnesota, UCLA, Georgetown and all those colleges.

Have you been to any campuses yet?

I've been to Illinois, Purdue. I went there and visited with my mom. Xavier. Butler, because that is right around my area.

Have they resolved your coaching situation yet? (Due to Wirt locisng, all the coaches in the Gary area have to reapply for their jobs. There had been rumors that Dawson could transfer if Renaldo Thomas is not retained.

No. They are still talking about it. I hope that he gets the job next year. I'll be back.

Are you going to any individual or team camps this summer?

June 11 through the 14th, I'll be in St. Louis for the Nike Jamboree. Vince Carter. If they see that you are fundamental, you get selected to the Vince Carter Camp.

Do you come from a basketball family? Any brothers, dad, mother or sisters play?

My mom. She played basketball back in high school. She's 6-2 or 6-3. She played ball. She was going away to college when she got pregnant with me, so she started going to community college and got her degree.

Do you have a favorite school yet or is still a little bit early?

It's still kind of early. I like Indiana, Purdue. I like those colleges, Good programs.

Do you know much about the Gophers?

They had called my coach and sent my a letter with a questionnaire.
