New Mexico Center Alex Kirk Gets Gopher Offer

Alex Kirk, a 6-foot-11 big man from Los Alamos (NM) High who has had an strong spring, has picked up a scholarship offer from Minnesota. Kirk is one of the West's top big man and is ranked as the Scout's #10 center in the country. Kirk is attracting interest from many of the top programs in the country, including Minnesota. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Kirk and his father to learn the latest.

Alex Kirk had an outstanding junior season as he averaged 28.0 points, 14.6 rebounds and 6.7 blocked shots per game, leading the Class 4A in all three categories. He had 39 points and 14 rebounds in the quarterfinal loss to Artesia in the state playoffs.

Kirk has shined this season as a member of the Houston Hoops AAU program, which has caused his recruitment list to continue to grow, according to his father Alan.

"He got contacted today by Wake Forest," Alan said. "It just goes on and on."

Alex said that he received the scholarship offer from Minnesota Monday from head coach Tubby Smith.

"He actually called my father earlier in the day and I gave him a call back after dinner," Alex said. "He said that he had people who talked about me playing in Sabes and they said that I was really good and the skills that I had."

Kirk admits that his hectic schedule will likely prevent him from checking out many schools in the upcoming months.

I don't know how many schools I am going to have a chance to check out," Alex said. "I am booked until August with tournaments and camps. I don't know how much time I will have to go and check out schools.

This weekend, I am down in the Memorial Day Classic (in Suwanee, Georgia)," Alex said. "I go to the Pangos All-American Camp and the week after that is the NBA top 100 Camp in Virginia).

Alex is hoping to play at the Amare Stoudemire camp for top post players and the LeBron James All-American Camp.

"I have not heard anything from them, but I am hoping."

Kirk has scholarship offers from schools such as USC, California, Oregon State, Arizona State, Utah State, Colorado, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Texas Tech, Tulane, South Alabama and Vanderbilt and recruiting interest from Oregon, Indiana, Kansas, Washington and Stanford.

Kirk has become a must-have recruit for homestate New Mexico. Head coach Steve Alford, assistant Craig Neal and the school's president all recently attended one of Kirk's games.

Kirk comes from a basketball family. His father, Alan, played at Los Alamos High and Eastern New Mexico University. He has coached at Los Alamos for twelve years. Kirk is a city municipal judge and was a police chief for ten years.

Kirk played last year for the Southwest Titans, which became the Danny Granger Hurrianes. He is playing for the Houston Hoops AAU program this spring and summer.
