Junior RB Calvin Phillips Commits to Gophers

Calvin Phillips, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound junior running back from Momence (IL) High, has become the second player from the Class of 2011 to commit to Minnesota, according to sources close to the program. Phillips attended the Minnesota football camp last month and joins Mahtomedi Tommy Olson as the second commitment for the Gophers.

Calvin Phillips helped lead the Redskins to a 9-2 mark last season, losing to Bushnell-Prairie City-Avon 22-20 as he was held to just 31 rushing yards on 13 carries. They had entered the game as the number one seed.

Phillips attended the Minnesota football camp last month with his cousin, Curtis Crossley, a scout for the Minnesota Vikings. Crossley played college football at Northern Illinois, where he was teammates with Gopher running back coach Thomas Hammock.

GoldenSports.Net watched Phillips at the camp and was impressed with his strong play. He was named Sangamon Valley All=Conference last year as he rushed for 1,456 yards and 24 touchdowns on 150 carries.
