Commit Lamonte Edwards Stars In Season Opener

Lamonte Edwards, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound LB/RB from Woodbury who committed to Minnesota in March, shined for the Royals in their season-opening 34-7 win over new crosstown rival East Ridge. Edwards paced the Royals to a 9-2 mark last season, losing to Cretin Derham Hall twice. Edwards, who was getting early looks from several Midwest schools, became the second in-state player to commit to Minnesota.

Lamonte Edwards finished with 163 yards and three scores on the offensive side and had two sacks, four tackles for a loss and three forced fumbles, despite playing less than half of the game on the defensive end.

Edwards was also offered by Iowa, Wisconsin, and UAB before verballing to Minnesota in March. He was receiving interest from Northwestern, Nebraska, Michigan State and Notre Dame before committing to the Gophers.
