Gopher Commit Matt Eggen Enjoys Senior Season

Matt Eggen, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound offensive lineman from LaCrosse (WI) Logan, was Minnesota's sixth commit and the second verbal from the Badger state, when he committed to Minnesota at the end of June. He has helped lead the Rangers to a 4-1 start this season. GoldenSports.Net recently caught up with Eggen to learn more about his senior season and decision to become a Gopher.

Matt Eggen has helped pace Logan to a 4-1 start this season. They were upset by Holmen 35-18 in the fourth game of the year. It was Holmen's lone victory this season. The Rangers, who are averaging 30.4 points per game and faces 3-2 Onalaska Friday.

Eggen committed to Minnesota over offers from Indiana, Western Michigan, Marshall, Northern Illinois, Buffalo, North Dakota State, North Dakota, Northern Iowa and Illinois State. He had also received interest from Michigan State, Iowa State, Nebraska and Wisconsin.

Eggen led Logan to a 8-2 record last year, losing to Marshfield 25-14 in their final game of the season. The Rangers tied with La Crosse Aquinas for the Mississippi Valley Conference title.

Eggen was named first team WFCA (Wisconsin football coaches association) All-State and second team Associated Press All-State. He was also chosen WFCA all-region, La Crosse Tribune first-team all-area and first-team all-conference as an offensive lineman. He was also named first-team all-conference as a defensive lineman.

Eggen was an honorable-mention Mississippi Valley Conference offensive lineman as a sophomore.

Eggen has high expectations this season.

"Team-wise, everyone's goal is to win conference and make a run in the playoffs. Individually, I just want to do the best that I can."

Eggen committed to the Minnesota this summer, so he could concentrate on his senior campaign

"I was planning on making my decision in July, so I could focus all senior year on my team and be a leader for this team."

Eggen said that there was plenty of like about Minnesota when he made his decision.

"It is a great atmosphere. The coaching staff is great. Academically, it is top notch. It is just a great place."

Eggen attended the Gopher game versus California and was impressed with the new TCF Stadium.

"It feels great. Great atmosphere."

Eggen is working hard for this season and prepare for college.

"Strength. Speed. Everything. From high school to college is a big jump."
