Calvin Godfrey Gets Minnesota Interest

Calvin Godfrey, a 6-foot-8, 245-pound big man from New Hope (MN) Robbinsdale Cooper, has attracted the attention of Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith and assistant Vince Taylor. Godfrey has helped pace the Hawks to a 3-0 start after a double overtime win over Minnetonka. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Godfrey to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Calvin Godfrey committed to Wisconsin-Milwaukee in August of 2008, but he has since re-opened his recruitment. He played his sophomore season at Milwaukee (WI) Custer and junior year at Fitchburg (MA) Notre Dame Academy. Godfrey transferred to Robbinsdale Cooper.

Godfrey scored six points in a 63-55 win over Robbinsdale Armstrong as Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith watched. He had 15 points in their 76-46 victory over Henry Sibley with Gopher assistant Vince Taylor was in attendance. Godfrey had a season-best 17 in their 86-81 double overtime win over Minnetonka.

Godfrey told GoldenSports.Net that heis wide-open on his recruitment.

"The only one that is really interested in me is probably the University of Minnesota. I know that Texas Southern is interested and a couple of other schools. I try not to focus on that."

With Godfrey moving into his third school in three years, some college have likely lost track of Godfrey. However, he is hoping that a strong start to his senior year will create some positive buzz.

"I think that a lot more publicity will be coming around and that will be good for me."

Godfrey, who is an outstanding athlete, feels that he has several strengths as a player.

"I'm quicker than the average player my size. I like to adjust to any team that I am on. As long as they feel comfortable with me, I'm comfortable with them."

Godfrey is working hard to improve several aspects of his game.

"My dribbling and my confidence in shooting."

Godfrey has improved his scoring in every game so far this season.

"The first game, I was real nervous. I had a lot riding on that game. I had just found out that I was eligible the day before and it was my birthday, so it was a heart-felt game. After that game, it took me just to slow down and realize what was going on and adjust to what was going on."

Godfrey said that he didn't know that Tubby smith was in the crowd of his season opener.

"I try to not pay attention to the crowd. I had a lot of family out there, too."

Godfrey is working hard to be academically eligible as a college freshman.

"I got an 18 on the ACT. I have not taken the SAT yet. I'm really close. I have to take the ACT again and hopefully get higher. Probably study a lot more now. I think that the next test in January. I missed the one in December."
