Joe Coleman Draws Minnesota Interest

Joe Coleman, a 6-foot-3 junior wing from Minnetonka (MN) Hopkins who attended Tubby's Tip-Off and last night's win over South Dakota State, is attracting serious interest from the Gophers. Coleman is averaging 28.4 points per game for the #1 ranked Royals, who are off to a 5-0 start.

Joe Coleman came off the bench last year for the 31-0 Royals, who won the Class AAAA state title. He averaged 6.1 points per game off the bench and reached double figures three times, including a season-high 15 points against Irondale. Hopkins lost all five starters to graduation and Coleman was expected to carry more of the scoring load.

However, while most observers expected to improve his scoring, but it is doubtful that anyone could have foreseen his early season productivity. Coleman scored 43 points in their season opening 102-87 win against Minneapolis Henry. He followed that effort by going for 29 against Columbia Heights, 16 versus Maple Grove, 31 in a win over Tartan and 23 in their 77-73 victory over Henry Sibley

Coleman, who is younger brother of former Gopher Dan, has receiver a scholarship offer from Santa Clara. He is drawing interest from Iowa State, Northern Iowa, Iowa, Minnesota and Wichita State and an offer from Minnesota could be coming soon.

Coleman plays for the Howard Pulley AAU program.

Hopkins plays in the Best Buy Augsburg Classic Monday-Wednesday.
