Joe Coleman Talks About Minnesota Offer

Joe Coleman, a 6-foot-3 junior wing from Hopkins, recently received a scholarship offer from Minnesota. Coleman is averaging 27.6 points per game for the #1 ranked Class AAAA Royals, who are off to a 7-0 start and will face #1 Class AAA St. Paul Johnson tonight in the Best Buy Holiday Classic championship game. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Coleman to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Joe Coleman has shined for Hopkins in their two games in the Best Buy Holiday Classic, scoring 24 and 27 points as the Royals have advanced to the championship game.

Coleman meet with Minnesota head coach Tubby Smith last Wednesday after their win over South Dakota State.

"It went really well. We had a nice conversation down there. Talked to all the coaches. Saw the players."

Coleman said that Smith talked to him about becoming a Gopher.

"He told me that I could come and play there. He said that it was up to me and when I am ready to make a decision to just let him know."

Coleman had planned to make a visit to Northern Iowa for a game in December, but the severe snowstorms postponed that trip.

"I plan on going there soon. I don't know when."

Coleman now has two offers from Santa Clara and Minnesota, but he is hearing from other schools.

"Wichita State, Iowa, Harvard, Columbia, Yale and a little bit from Wisconsin."

Coleman has plenty of ties to Minnesota. His older brother Dan played for the Gophers and his uncle, Ben played for Minnesota for two years before transferring to Maryland. Joe was often seen at Williams Arena as a ballboy for the Gophers while growing up.

"It would be a great opportunity to play there. I would love to play there. It's just that there are a lot of thing to consider. It's early. It's something that I will have to think through with my family and make a decision."

Coleman admits that he has heard from friends and relatives about the Minnesota offer.

"A lot of people have been asking me about it, whether I am thinking about committing early and stuff like that. I just told them that it was something that I was going to have to think through, but I am excited about the offer."
