Tyus Jones Plays in Front of Saul Smith

Tyus Jones, a 6-foot, eighth grade point guard from Apple Valley, continues to make a name for himself. Jones, who is considered the state's top player in the Class of 2014, had twelve points and nine assists to lead the Eagles to a 65-62 win over Bloomington Jefferson. Minnesota assistant coach Saul Smirh attended the game and GoldenSports.Net recently caught up with Jones to learn the latest.

Tyus Jones has helped lead Apple Valley to an 8-2 mark, losing only to #7 Class AAAA Eden Prairie and #6 Stillwater. Jones told GoldenSports.Net that he is happy with his team's play so far this season.

"We have been playing good, team basketball. Our team chemistry is getting stronger as the season has been going on. I'm impressed how we are playing as a team. and not so much one-on-one. It is going good.

Jones is averaging 13.8 points and 9.1 assists per game and is pleased with his individual play.

"I think that I am playing pretty well. It is a littler tough, But I am up to the challenge. I think that I am playing so far so good this year."

Jones admits that it is heady stuff being a eighth grade starter on a top ten ranked team and having top coaches watch his games.

"I try not to focus on it too much. I've got to stay humble. I can't get a big head about it. I have to keep things in perspective. I just try to stay humble."

Jones said that he is continuing to improve his all-around game, especially after playing a physical Eastview team Tuesday when he scored 21 points in a conference win.

"It was a good challenge. I have to work on getting stronger with the ball because they tried to put pressure on me and get physical with me. I'm guessing that more teams will try to do that this year, so I have to just get strong with the ball and be up for the challenge."

Jones figures to be heavily pursued by the top area AAU programs this spring.

"I haven't really thought about that. I'm just thinking about the season right now and I'll think about that stuff when it gets here."
