Gabe Mezzenga to Walk-On At Minnesota

Gabe Mezzenga, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound linebacker from Totino-Grave, has decided to walk-on at Minnesota. He has been accepted into the University of Minnesota, but needs to submit some additional paperwork, thus his name was not released yesterday with five other preferred walk-ons. Mezzenga talked to GoldenSports.Net about his decision to walk-on.

Gabe Mezzenga helped lead the Eagles to a 13-0 mark and the Class AAAA Bowl. He led the team with 118 tackles, ten for losses. Mezzenga had 15 hurries and had one intercepted in the Prep Bowl, which he returned for 21 yards. He was voted the North Suburban Conference Defensive player of the Year and has been a three-year starter.

Mezzenga had a scholarship offer from 2008 national champion UMD, but wanted the opportunity to play a the highest level.

"I wanted to play Division I football. I think that if I work hard, I could earn a scholarship by my sophomore year."

Minnesota signed just one linebacker, Dwayne Mitchell and loses their three senior starts Simoni Lawrence, Nate Triplett and Lee Campbell.
