Freshman Point Guard Justin Cobbs To Transfer

Justin Cobbs, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard from Los Angeles, is transferring from the program, according to a source close to the situation. Cobbs averaged 2.1 points and 1.3 rebounds per game in his first season with the Gophers. He is expected to transfer to a school closer to his California home.

Justin Cobbs picked Minnesota over interest from California, Long Beach State, San Diego, San Diego State, Santa Clara, USC, Washington and Washington State. All these schools offered him a scholarship except for California.

The departure of Cobbs leaves the Gophers a bit vunerable at point guard. Starting point guard Al Nolen was ruled academically ineligible for the second semester and his status is up in the air for his senior season. Devoe Joseph is the lone point guard on the roster and he is more suited for a combo guard role. Minnesota is hoping to land his yuonger brother, Cory, a standout playmaer from Findlay Prep. However, there is heavy competition from Texas, Villanova, Connecticut and UNLV for his services.
