Dwight Tillman ready to make Gopher debut

Dwight Tillman, a 5-foot-11, 184-pound cornerback from Lackawanna CC who signed with Minnesota in February, attended the Gophers' spring game this weekend. Tillman will join safety Herschel Thornton and former college teammate Jeff Wills, who started at right tackle and tight end Tiree Eure, who inked with the Gophers in December. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Tillman to find out the latest.

Dwight Tillman was named second team All-Northeast Football Conference. He helped lead Lackawanna to a 5-4 mark. He had 35 tackles, including 31 solo tackles. Tillman also had seven pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions.

Tillman, who runs a sub 4.5 forty yard dash, picked Minnesota over Kansas State and South Florida.

Lackawanna head coach Mark Duda previously told GoldenSports.Net that Tillman can contribute right away.

"He is a great kid and a great student. He will help you win. He can flat out cover. He can take one guy away. He is a Division I corner."

Tillman has high hopes for his role with Minnesota this fall.

"I plan on starting," Tillman said. "I am going to work hard and learn the play book and get that down. Once I do that, I should be in a good position to play."

Tillman believes that having play two years of junior college football is a big advantage rather than coming in as a freshman.

"It definitely does," Tillman said. "It will motivate me and we will motivate each other to play hard and work hard in the weight room. What we have to do to be successful at Minnesota, that's good. Playing with Herschel for two years in the defensive backfield is just more of a bond. It is a nice bond and we know each other well."

The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder thinks that having several familiar faces will also help his adjustment to Minnesota.

"It is a very big benefit," Tillman said. "My skills are better. When you come in as a freshman, you're nervous and you don't know what to do. You are out there lost, but now I have a good comfort in my own ability to play and I am ready to play."
