Paul Jesperson Talks About His Recruitment

Paul Jesperson, a 6-foot-7, 182-pound junior wing from Merrill (WI) High, shined this past weekend as a member of the Wisconsin Playmakers. He made my Sabes Invitational All-Tournament team as he led the Playmakers to the quarterfinals. GoldenSports.Net caught up with Jesperson to learn the latest on his recruitment

Paul Jesperson has received scholarship offers from Colorado State, Loyola, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, San Diego, South Dakota State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Arizona State, Butler and Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He attended summer camps last year at Marquette and Wisconsin.

Kurt Soderberg, the younger brother of former Wisconsin and Saint Louis University head coach, Brad Soderberg, is Jesperson's high school coach. Merrill had their best season in recent history as they finished 20-6, losing to Antigo 62-45, one game short of making the state tournament. The Bluejays had not won more than eleven games in their previous seven years. Jesperson averaged 20.5 points per game this season.

Jesperson averaged 15.8 points per game as a sophomore as he led Merrill to an 11-10 mark, losing to Wausau East 57-51 in the playoffs. He averaged 10.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game as a freshman for BlueJays who finished with an 8-13 record.

Jesperson is coached by older brother Jason on his Wisconsin Plsymakers AAU team, which advanced to the Sabes Invitational quarterfinals where they lost to host Howard Pulley. He scored 18 points in the loss and had 45 points in a previous contest.

Jesperson talked to GoldenSports.Net about his recruitment and work on his game.

What are you working on to improve as a player?

"I've been definitely working on my strength a lot. I've been hitting the weight room hard. Getting up shots. Working on my quickness with the ball. It is starting to help out."

Have you thought much about what camps you might attend this summer?

"Virginia just called me the other day and they want me to come to theirs in June. Otherwise, I'm not sure. I'll probably the Marquette and Wisconsin ones."

What are you hearing from Minnesota. I know that you were at one of the football and basketball games?

"I just talked to them recently, actually. I talked to Tubby Smith a little bit ago. It was a good conversation, so hopefully an offer is coming soon."

What about Wisconsin? They just got a commitment from a guard Ben Brust and are a bit tight on scholarships right now?

"They are in the mix definitely, but Minnesota and Northwestern are showing the most out of the Big Ten right now. I am actually taking a visit to Northwestern, Notre Dame and Butler this upcoming weekend."

Your team had a nice season this past year? Are you losing much talent to graduation

"We lose a couple of good guys, but there are a couple of guys coming up that have been working hard in the gym, so we should be fine."

What events are you playing in the rest of the spring?

"We are going to the NY2LASports, the Chicago Best Buy Classic and then I think that we are off until July."
