Connor McGovern To Attend Minnesota Camp

Connor McGovern, a 6-foot-4, 275-pound offensive and defensive tackle for Fargo (ND) Shanley, will attend the Minnesota football camp this weekend. McGovern, who helped lead the Deacons to the Class AA state title game, has received two scholarship offers and plenty of recruiting interest. Connor McGovern helped lead Shanley to their first state title since 1983 as they defeated Devils Lake 31-30 in overtime. The Deacons scored first in overtime and stopped the Firebirds' two-point conversation attempt to seal the win. He was named first team All-State as a defensive tackle

GoldenSports.Net caught up with McGovern to learn the latest on his recruitment.

You have offers from North Dakota and North Dakota State. What other schools are you hearing from the most?

"The two and Mizzou has talked to me. Harvard, Dartmouth and Brown have been contacting me a lot."

You have attended camps at Missouri and Colorado and will be at Minnesota Friday. What other camps are you attending?

"I am going to the Ivy League; the 28th, 29th and 30th. I am not going to Colorado State."

You attended the Missouri camp. Have you talked to their coaches recently?

"I've talked to them a little bit. They said that they are reviewing the films and evaluating right now."

What are you hearing from Minnesota?

"I have not heard that much from them. Just to come down to camp and stuff."

What position are you expected to play in college?

"They don't know exactly. Most likely guard or center since I am only 6-4."

What are you working on to improve yourself as a player?

"Every morning, Monday through Thursday from 8 to 10:125, we have a speed camp. Some days, it is conditioning. Some days, it is speed training circuit, agility circuits for an hour and then we lift for an hour."

You won the state title this past year. Do you return a lot of your players?

"Every person who scored a touchdown in the state championship is back. We have an All-State quarterback returning. All-Conference running back returning. Two All-Conference receivers returning. They should be pretty good. An All-Conference safety coming back, too."

You wrestled last year. Are you planning on doing that again this upcoming season?

"We are going to co-opt with another school for wrestling. I don't really want to co-opt, so I'm just going to play basketball."

McGovern registered a 28" vertical jump at the Missouri camp, and reports personal bests of 325 pound bench press, 515 pound squat, and 320 pounds in the power clean. He's bench pressed 225 pounds as many as 15 times.
