On Sunday, Coach Tubby Smith appeared on the Sports Huddle with Sid Hartman and Dave Mona radio show on 830 WCCO to talk about the short but crucial, July recruiting period.
The times of July 6 through the 15 and July 22 to July 31 are known as evaluation periods where teams can get a closer look at recruits through certified NCAA events. Smith explained, "Recruiting this time of the year we are evaluating players." He went on to say, "This is a window of opportunity. We have 20 days in July that we can sit, watch and evaluate players." This period is a great time for college programs to see how recruits stack up against other top players from around the US.
Coach Smith discussed how he would be attending the Nike Peach Jam in North Augusta, South Carolina. "We'll be in Augusta later on tonight and tomorrow morning, after we get our camp started, we'll go back to August and we're watching AAU teams, traveling teams from around the country." The Peach Jam which ran from July 12-15 is one of the biggest AAU tournaments of the summer. The tourney was full of talented athletes including five-star recruits Michael Gilchrist, Marquis Teague and Austin Rivers.
