Basketball Recruiting Overview

With the July evaluations periods winding down, it is time to take a look at the current Gopher recruiting targets that are holding offers from the Maroon and Gold.

The first, and highest rated, player with an offer from the Gophers is 6-foot-5 small forward, Branden Dawson. Dawson, who hails from the Hoosier State is one of the most sought after recruits in the country.

The long, athletic wing can score in a variety of ways. He can get to the hoop and score though contact, pull-up and shoot a mid-range shot over a defender or pick up garbage baskets off misses. He also uses his length and athleticism to play solid defense.

With offers from prestigious programs like Indiana, Michigan State and Georgetown, the Gophers find themselves facing stiff competition. In an interview with Mike Hughes of InsideTheVille.com, Dawson said, "Michigan State is up there. So are Georgetown, Purdue, Indiana and UCLA." This leaves the likelihood of landing Dawson at 5-10%.

The next player with an offer to play his home games in the Barn is Hopkins wing, Joe Coleman. Coleman, a two-time state champion, is an excellent all-around player.

He is athletic enough to play a strong transition game but he is also polished enough in the half-court to score there as well. Coleman isn't a big wing, 6-foot-3, but what he lacks in height he makes up for with his leaping ability and nose for the ball when rebounding.

After strong play during his junior season as well as for his Howard Pulley AAU team, Coleman has offers from Creighton, Colorado State, Iowa State, Minnesota, Santa Clara, and Seton Hall. Except the Gophers to have around a 60-65% of getting a commitment from Coleman.

The third player that currently has an offer from the Gophers is 6-5 shooting guard, Josh Oglesby. Oglesby , who is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is a tall guard with a quick trigger, high release and deep range. He has the ability to pass in transition or off the dribble to open teammates. Oglesby has recently been impressing scouts with his shooting displays in Las Vegas this week.

Evan Daniels of Scout.com wrote, "He buried threes from all over the floor and also mixed in a few step-in 18-footers." With a recent offer from the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Gophers seem to be in a bit of an uphill battle to nab Oglesby. The Gophers have about a 35% chance of landing the sharpshooter.
