The Golden Gophers are only losing one senior wide receiver, Hayo Carpenter and already have commitment from 6-foot-3 burner, Devin Crawford-Tufts from Edina High School. Minnesota expected to have dynamic freshman Marquise Hill play wide receiver this fall, but he was unable to qualify and had to attend junior college in hopes of meeting the academic requirements needed to gain admission into the university.
The Gophers have quality depth at wide receiver, but they will most likely look to take at least one more wideout, maybe two if they get the right combination.
One player who has a great shot of ending up in Maroon and Gold is 6-foot-1, 185-pound Lovett Gibson from Cedar Hill, TX. Gibson, who recently told Scout.com that his top three schools were Minnesota, UTEP and North Texas, will likely make his final decision during his football season.
Minnesota coach Steve Watson stays in touch with Gibson nearly every day and has done an amazing job making the versatile receiver feel part of the Gopher family. Gibson is scheduled to take his official visit to Minnesota when they take on the Trojans of USC. The Gophers could get some exciting news on that visit or shortly thereafter.
Minnesota nabbed power runningback Donnell Kirkwood out of Delray Beach, FL last year and are hoping they can repeat their success with 6-foot-1, 170-pound Herve Coby. In a June update with Scout.com's Mike Bakas, Coby claimed to be open to every school that has offered him but singled out USF, West Virginia, Illinois, and Minnesota as schools he liked a lot.
Frisco, TX wide receiver Cameron Brown stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 195 pounds. His size and physical style as a wide out would be a perfect complement to the deep of current commit Devin Crawford-Tufts. Besides Minnesota, Western Kentucky is Brown's only other offer.
With Minnesota sitting at or near the top of Lovett Gibson's list, it will be interesting to see if the Gophers push hard for Brown now or wait until Gibson makes his choice. The coaches are definitely staying in contact with Brown who just told me he talked to coach Watson last week and, "Caught up on some things."
Two more players to keep your eye on are 6-foot-2 Tad Ecby and 6-foot-3 Allen Robinson. Ecby claims Minnesota as his only offer and Robinson holds a Minnesota offer as well as an offer from Toledo. If Minnesota decides to push hard for both, they should have a great chance. It will be interesting to see how the wide receiver board shakes out with limited spots available.
