Earlier this week, the University of Minnesota announced that the series between the Gophers and the Texas Longhorns that was scheduled for 2015 and 2016 will not take place.
The games were canceled due to a contract dispute about video rights. The game at TCF Bank Stadium would have been the first meeting between the two storied programs since 1936.
The Gophers have been doing a good job of adding BCS non-conference opponents. In 2009, California came to TCF Bank Stadium in which the Bears won 35-21. This season the Trojans of Southern Cal will make a trip to Minnesota for a non-conference battle. In 2011, the Gophers will return the favor by traveling to Los Angeles to play Lane Kiffen and the Trojans.
Minnesota is doing the right thing by trying to schedule non-conference games against top opponents. Playing in big games against teams like Cal and USC will give the Gophers the national exposure they need to gain an edge in recruiting.
