MSU loses to Memphis, 8-7

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Ryan Martin's 10th-inning solo home run capped a furious University of Memphis comeback Tuesday night and lifted the Tigers (6-11) to an 8-7 win over No. 9 Missisisppi State (14-3-1) at AutoZone Park.

MSU appeared headed for a series sweep, building up a 7-0 lead off UM starter Zach Cook in the first two frames. First baseman Matthew Brinson doubled, homered and drove in a season-high five runs to power the Bulldogs.

Matthew Maniscalco opened the game with a bunt single, Steve Gendron followed with a double and Matthew Brinson drove them in with a double. State added three more hits in the second, the big blow a two-out Brinson blast to straightaway center field by Brinson.

Bulldog pitching was in control for most of the game, with freshman starter Brad Corley blanking UM with one-hit pitching during a career-longest five-inning start.

But the Tigers roared back to life, scoring a pair of unearned runs off relief pitcher Jonathan Papelbon in the eighth and pulling even with a five-run ninth inning burst against Saunders Ramsey (0-1), the fourth Bulldog hurler in the game. Ramsey walked three and gave up three hits in the frame, including a game-tying two-run single by Kevin House.

Daniel de Armas (1-0) retired the Bulldogs in order in the 10th, setting the stage for Martin's game-winning shot to left.

The Bulldogs out-hit the Tigers 9-8, with Brinson and Maniscalco collecting a pair of hits each and Steve Gendron lashing a double to extend his hitting streak to a career high-matching 11 games.

The Bulldogs continue their season-longest five-game road trip in Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend, taking on the Arkansas Razorbacks (18-2, 2-1 SEC) in a three-game series. Friday's opener at Baum Stadium/Cole Field is set for 6:30 p.m., with junior lefty Paul Maholm (2-1, 1.50) set to start for the Bulldogs.
