R.I.P. #36

After a bout with cancer, Mississippi State defensive end Nick Bell passed away this afternoon. Loved and respected by many, Bell crossed over to the other side after being readmitted to the University of Alabama medical center in Birmingham on Sunday. He was able to watch his beloved Bulldogs earn a win over Kentucky on TV Saturday night.

Bell began complaining of headaches on Sunday morning and before the day was over, Nick was back in the hospital.

MSU Coach Dan Mullen checked in on Nick's condition on Monday after speaking at a Birmingham luncheon.

Shortly after Mullen's visit, word began to spread that Nick's situation was extremely precarious.

Dozens of Mississippi State teammates made the trip over to Birmingham to support Nick and his family.

Now those same teammates must pick up the pieces and move forward without their friend, teammate and brother.

Nick would want his fellow Bulldogs to pick up the torch and move forward.

Bell committed to Mississippi State in November of 2007 shortly after an unofficial visit to Starkville.

He redshirted in 2008 and began earning some playing time in 2009. He earned a varsity letter for his play last season.

Earlier this year, Nick looked to be coming into his own before he was sidelined due to complications from his illness.

Bell leaves behind a loving mother, Linda, two sisters, Monica and Ashley, as well as a grateful Bulldog family who appreciate his love, desire, dedication and sacrifice for the Mississippi State football program.

We will pass along funeral arrangements once we are made aware of them.

Nick was just 20.
