STARKVILLE, Miss - With just under a week before the Mississippi State women's basketball team officially opens its 2010-11 season, the Lady Bulldogs will take to the court Sunday afternoon for a tune up against NCAA NCAA Div. II member Montevallo in exhibition play. State and Montevallo will tip at 2 p.m. CT at the Humphrey Coliseum and admission is free.
The Lady Bulldogs are coming off the program's first NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearance last season, but see the addition of 11 newcomers this season. Senior Mary Kathryn Govero, MSU's lone senior, averaged 11.2 points while shooting 39 percent from three-point range a season ago. Junior guard Diamber Johnson, who has played in 66 career games, started five games last season.
The 2010-11 season marks the 16th for head coach Sharon Fanning-Otis at the helm at Mississippi State and her 35th season overall. Already the program's winningest coach with 254 wins, Fanning-Otis has taken the Lady Bulldogs to six NCAA tournaments and 11 overall postseason appearances in 15 seasons.
The Montevallo Falcons, members of the Peach Belt Conference in NCAA Division II, are led by first-year head coach Mechan Vanderpool. The Falcons' leading returner is senior forward Carrie Parrott who appeared in 27 games while starting 26 a year ago, averaging 9.6 points per game.
Following Sunday's exhibition contest, the Lady Bulldogs will officially open its season on Friday, Nov. 12 at 4 p.m. when they entertain South Carolina-Upstate. That game will be the first of two games in a double header with the MSU men's team that will play against Tennessee at 7 p.m.
PENSACOLA, Fla. - Five Bulldogs on the Mississippi State men's tennis team advanced in qualifying play at the Pensacola Futures in Pensacola, Fla.
A trio of juniors led by Louis Cant along with George Coupland and Artem Ilyushin all were victorious along with a pair of true freshmen Zach White and Malte Stropp.
Cant won easily in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, while Coupland also earned an easy victory, 6-1, 6-0. Ilyushin took care of things in straight sets as well, 6-3, 6-0.
White won 6-2, 6-4, and Stropp was victorious in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Tanner Stump dropped a two-set bout, 6-1, 6-0.
MSU will continue play at the Pensacola Futures on Sunday and results will be made available at http://www.mstateathletics.com.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - A pair of Bulldogs from the Mississippi State men's tennis team completed tournament action at the Crimson Tide Fall Championship on Saturday in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
In doubles action in the Crimson Draw, Bulldog tandem senior Max Gregor and junior Hrehan Hakeem won in the round of 16, taking down Adam Donaldson and Robert Hall of Louisville, 9-7. In quarterfinals action, State's tandem was defeated by Vanderbilt's Charlie Jones and Alex Zotov in a very tight match, 9-7, eliminating the Bulldogs from doubles action.
Gregor was active in consolation play but dropped a tight three-set battle, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(9), to Paul Boslet of Radford.
Currently, MSU's roster is split with the remaining Bulldogs competing in the Pensacola Futures in Pensacola, Fla., which will conclude State's fall season.
STANFORD, CALIF. - Mississippi State's women's golf team knocked 13 strokes off its first-round total firing a 309 in the second round of the Pac-10/SEC Challenge at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
In a tournament field that features 17 of the top 34 teams in the nation, MSU is currently tied for 20th.
Lady Bulldog senior Mallory Batson bettered her score by 10 strokes from round one to shoot a 2-over-par 73 on the day. Fellow senior Erika Thornton matched her first round score of 75 for round two.
Also cutting six strokes off her first-day total, Esther Huffman continued her stellar freshman campaign firing a 3-over-par 74 in round two.
Maria Roos and Mary Langdon Gallagher also completed the second round with scores of 84 and 88 respectively.
