STARKVILLE, Miss. - Malte Stropp of the Mississippi State men's tennis team has been tabbed as this week's Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week based on his past weekend's performance at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in College Station, Texas.
"We are very proud of Malte (Stropp) and all that he has done in his short time here at MSU," said Coach Per Nilsson, who is in his fourth season as the Bulldogs' head man. "Malte has been a great addition to our lineup and we expect him to continue to improve and earn more honors in the future."
Stropp is the first Bulldog to be honored by the SEC in its weekly conference honors since former Bulldog Chris Doerr was named the conference's player of the week on Feb. 17, 2009.
Stropp came to MSU by way of Dusseldorf, Germany, and entered the fall ranked nationally by the ITA as one of the top 10 newcomers for collegiate tennis this season.
Stropp recently extended his current win streak to four matches while competing at the No. 3 position for the Maroon and White. Stropp battled from behind to take down Texas A&M's Alexey Grigorov, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0(3) and won by default on Sunday against Arizona. In doubles play, Stropp along with teammate Louis Cant easily took down No. 32 nationally ranked Alberto Bautista and Colin Hoover of Texas A&M, 8-3.
This year, Stropp boasts a team-best nine victories and is currently riding a four-match win streak heading into this weekends' match against 23rd-ranked Georgia Tech.
The Bulldogs and the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech will square off on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 12 p.m. CT.
