Carver HS's Craig Sword Commits To MSU

Craig Sword, a 2012 6-3, 180-pound guard who plays for Montgomery-Carver High School, committed to Mississippi State Monday morning.

Head Coach James Jackson Q&A

When did Craig makes his decision to commit to Mississippi State?
"I think he made his decision more or less over the weekend. He had a little AAU practice and he had his uncle come down from Florida. He then got with his family. But he had already expressed that he was really leaning to Mississippi State. I think (he and his family) talked it out this weekend. He told me about it on Sunday when I got back into town."

When did he called the Mississippi State coaches and tell them?
"He did that this morning."

Did he give you the reasons why he chose Mississippi State?
"Like most kids, he went down there on an unofficial visit to a football game. He walked around the campus a little bit. He said he just liked the feel there. He has been to the Alabama and Auburn campuses. But he just liked the feel. He also said they have a lot of jump shooters but he feels he can get to the basket and they have a need for that. It would be a great fit for him."

When did Mississippi state get involved with him?
"During the recruiting of (MSU 2011 commitment) Roquez (Johnson) they were interested. But a lot of people liked Craig because he played well on the AAU circuit. And he did well during our high school season. But they have always been right there in the mix with him."

Who were some of the other teams who showed a lot of recruiting interest in him?
"Georgia, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Memphis came in, Auburn, Alabama showed a great deal of attention to him and had been coming to a lot of games just like the rest of those guys; really the majority of the SEC schools were in the hunt for him. Also, a lot of mid-major schools showed interest, of course. They told me if he didn't go high they would love to try to get in on the action."

What makes Craig so special?
"He is an exciting player. He is a down-to-earth, humble kid. You wouldn't know if he scored 35 points or 5 points because he has the same demeanor. He's a hard worker every practice, every game. He's a great defender and he can really score. He's labeled a scorer because he can create his own shot. And he's a pretty good slasher also."
