Will We, Or Won't We?

Will Mississippi State baseball make it to the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament this year? Read my take on it.

There has been much discussion about whether Mississippi State's baseball team will make it to the SEC Tournament this season. As of now, with four SEC series left to be played, Mississippi State is in 9th place in the overall SEC standings, two games behind the 5th seed spot and one game behind the 8th seed. That's not bad when you consider who Mississippi State has played in their first 6 SEC series and who they have yet to play in their final 4 SEC series.

I'm going to look at each conference team's remaining schedules and come up with my own predictions on who will wind up where in the overall conference standings and who will be in and who will be out when it comes to the SEC tournament.

1st - South Carolina - 24-6 SEC
Remaining Schedule - South Carolina, who is currently 14-4 in the SEC, will defeat Auburn 3 straight at home, win 2 of 3 against Ole Miss on the road, sweep Arkansas at home in a 3-game set and defeat Alabama 2 of 3 on the road. That's a record of 10-2 in their last 12 games.

2nd - Mississippi State - 14-16
Remaining Schedule - MSU, currently 7-11 in the SEC, will win 2 of 3 against Alabama at home (Bama has lost 9 of last 10 SEC games), then go on the road to Tennessee and win 2 of 3 (Tennessee is 2-7 at home in SEC games). MSU then goes on the road at Ole Miss and lose 2 of 3 (Ole Miss' 2 starting lefties get the better of MSU, a poor lefty-hitting team), then come home and win 2 of 3 against LSU (LSU is 1-8 in SEC road games) for a 12-game record of 7-5, putting their final SEC record at 14-16. Due to winning the tie-breaker against Auburn, who tied their 14-16 record in the Western Division, MSU wins the West and earns the No. 2 seed.

3rd - Vanderbilt - 24-6
Remaining Schedule - Vanderbilt, which is currently 14-4 in the SEC, will sweep Tennessee at home, defeat Kentucky 3 of 3 on the road, defeat Florida 2 of 3 at home and win 2 of 3 against Georgia on the road. That's a record of 10-2 in their last 12 games, putting them in a tie with South Carolina for the top seed. But since South Carolina won the head to head battle 2 of 3, they get the No. 1 seed according to the SEC tie-breaker, leaving Vanderbilt the No. 3 seed behind South Carolina and Western Division winner MSU.

4th - Florida - 23-7
Remaining Schedule - Florida is currently 14-4. They will sweep Ole Miss 3 of 3 at home, then go to Arkansas and win 2 of 3. They will lose 2 of 3 to Vanderbilt on the road, then win 3 of 3 against Kentucky at home for a 9-3 twelve game record, putting them at 23-7 in the SEC.

5th - Georgia - 18-12
Remaining Schedule - Georgia is currently 11-7 in the SEC. They will host Arkansas at home and win 2 of 3, they then go to Auburn where they will win 1 of 3, from there they go to Kentucky who they will defeat 3 of 3 games, following that series they host Vanderbilt who they will win 1 game against. They will have a 7-5 record in the last 12 games, giving them an SEC record of 18-12.

6th - Auburn - 14-16
Remaining Schedule - Auburn is currently 9-9 in the SEC. They will lose 3 of 3 to South Carolina on the road, then defeat Georgia 2 of 3 at home. They stay at home and win 2 of 3 against Alabama before going on the road and losing 2 of 3 at Tennessee. They end up with a 5-7 record in their last 12 games for a final 14-16 SEC record. Because Auburn lost their series against MSU, they lose the tie-breaker.

7th - Alabama - 13-17
Remaining Schedule - Alabama is currently 8-10 in the SEC. They go on the road to MSU where they will lose 2 of 3, then come back home and win 2 of 3 against LSU. They then go to Auburn where they lose 2 of 3, then come back home and lose 2 of 3 to South Carolina. Their 12-game record will be 5-7 which will give them a final SEC record of 13-17. They win the tie-breaker with Arkansas and Ole Miss for the 7th seed.

8th - Arkansas - 13-17
Remaining Schedule - Arkansas is currently 9-9 in the SEC. They go on the road and lose 2 of 3 to Georgia, then come back home and lose 2 of 3 to Florida. They then go to South Carolina where they lose 3 of 3, then come back home and win 2 of 3 against Ole Miss. They 12-game record will be 4-8 which gives them a final SEC record of 13-17. They win the tie-breaker with Ole Miss for the 8th seed in the SEC tournament.

9th - Ole Miss - 13-17
Remaining Schedule - Ole Miss is currently 9-9 in the SEC. They go on the road to Florida where they lose 3 of 3. They then lose 2 of 3 to South Carolina at home but follow that up with 2 of 3 against MSU at home. They then travel to Arkansas where they lose 2 of 3. Their final 12-game record will be 4-8 which will give them a final SEC record of 13-17. Because they lose the final seed to Arkansas they don't make the SEC tournament.

10th - LSU - 11-19
Remaining Schedule - LSU, currently 4-14 in the SEC, will win 3 of 3 against Kentucky at home, then go to Alabama where they will win 1 of 3. They will win 2 of 3 against Tennessee at home, then go to MSU where they win 1 of 3. Their 12-game SEC record will be 7-5 which will give them a final 11-19 SEC record.

11th - Tennessee - 10-20
Remaining Schedule - Tennessee is currently 5-13 in the SEC. They will lose 3 of 3 to Vanderbilt on the road, then come home and lose 2 of 3 to Mississippi State. They then go to LSU where they will win 1 of 3, then come back home and win 2 of 3 against Auburn for a final 12-game record of 10-20.

12th - Kentucky - 5-25
Remaining Schedule - Kentucky, which is currently 4-14 in the SEC, will go to LSU and lose 3 of 3, then come back home and lose 3 of 3 to Vanderbilt. They will then host Georgia who they will defeat 1 of 3 games, then go on the road at Florida where they will lose 3 of 3, for a 12-game record of 1-11 and a final SEC record of 5-25.
