Dogs Off To Good Start At SEC Championships

ATHENS, Ga. – Combined events and personal records were the highlight of Day 1 for Mississippi State at the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Athens.

Keisha Wallace started the day for the Maroon and White as she competed in the heptathlon, running her fastest time of the year (13.33) to win the 100m dash and en route to capturing 1,075 points. Next up was the high jump, where the sophomore placed 11th with a height of 5-1, earning 678 points for her efforts. The Jamaican native followed her jump with a personal best throw of 27-5 /2 to take 14th in the shot put and garner 423 points. Wallace wrapped her day with a win her second win, running 24.53 in the 200-meter dash to win the event and earn 930 points. In total, Wallace collected 3106 points to settle in eighth place with four events scored and three remaining.

Competing for the Bulldogs on day one were Antoine Lipscomb and Tevarus Christian, who took to the track to compete in the decathlon. First up for the pair was the 100m dash where Christian took second with a personal best time of 10.66 to earn 938 points, while Lipscomb finished eighth (11.27) to earn 801 points. Long jump was next where Christian earned 913 points for his third pace jump (24-3 ¾), while Lipscomb garnered 795 for his seventh place jump (22-8 ½). In the shot put it was Lipscomb finishing ahead of Christian as he took ninth (34-0 ¾) earning 508 points, while Christian came in 11th (31-8 ¾) to secure 466 points.

Christian jumped a personal best 6-6 ¾ to take second in the high jump earning 803 points. Lipscomb cleared 6-2 to earn a 696 points and a seventh place finish. Personal bests were set as the Bulldogs closed out their day with the 400m dash. Christian posted his personal best as he finished fourth (49.09) to earn 857 points, while Lipscomb ran a personal best 50.14 to take sixth and earn 808 points. After five events and with five remaining, Christian holds a third place spot (3,977) while Lipscomb is in eighth with 3,608 points.

Action will resume at Spec Towns Track in Athens at 10:00 am on Friday with the women's hammer throw.
