"Our prayers are with Al and his family," MSU athletics director Scott Stricklin said. "We wish him a speedy recovery."
Schmidt, 60, is in his 23rd season at Mississippi State, having spent the first 22 as a head coach before being named director of track and field last August.
"We feel surrounded with love with the outpouring of support from the Mississippi State family of coaches, staff, student-athletes and alumni," Schmidt's wife, Jessie, said. "We are also very grateful to the University of Georgia Sports Medicine staff and the staff at the Athens Regional Medical Center for the care they provided."
