Atlanta Baseball Regional Preview

No. 1 seed Georgia Tech, No. 2 seed Southern Miss, No. 3 seed Mississippi State and No. 4 seed Austin Peay will compete in the Atlanta NCAA Baseball Regional this weekend. Find out how they stack up to each other as well as other information about the regional.

    Starting Pitching

    Georgia Tech - Georgia Tech is led by junior RHP Mark Pope who is 11-4 with a 1.77 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 112 innings. He has completed 5 of his 15 starts. Pope is one of thirty finalists for the 2011 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, an award that is given to the nation's top amateur baseball player. The usual second starter is junior LHP Jed Bradley who is 6-3 with a 3.59 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 90.1 innings. Sophomore RHP Buck Farmer is their third starter. For the year, Farmer is 10-3 with a 2.99 ERA. He's struck out 97 in 99.1 innings.

    Southern Miss - Southern Miss has two of their weekend starting pitchers out due to being ruled academically ineligible but their ace, fifth-year senior RHP Todd McInnis, will be primed and ready. McInnis is 8-2 with a 2.61 ERA and 82 Ks in 89.2 innings. He was named this year's Conference-USA Pitcher-of-the-Year. Freshman RHP Bommer Scarborough has also started for the Golden Eagles, although in mid-week games. His record is 1-1 and his ERA is 2.89. He has struck out 30 in 46.2 innings. A third pitcher who has started a few games for Southern Miss is junior RHP Josh Thomason who is 2-2 on the season with a 3.07 ERA.

    Mississippi State - MSU will throw sophomore LHP Luis Pollorena against Southern Miss. Pollorena, who will be starting just his fourth game of the season, is 6-5 with a 4.44 ERA. He has struck out 31 in 50.2 innings. Other pitchers that MSU will likely throw this weekend are junior LHP Nick Routt (2-3, 4.15 ERA, 43 SO in 43.1 IP), freshman RHP Evan Mitchell (5-1, 3.49 ERA, 39 strikeouts in 38.2 IP) and sophomore RHP Chris Stratton (5-7, 5.21 ERA, 74.1 IP, 74 SO).

    Austin Peay - The Governors primary starters, all left-handers, are junior LHP Jeremy Dobbs (9-2, 3.43 ERA, 85 SO, 86.2 IP), redshirt senior LHP Jack Snodgrass (3-6, 3.72 ERA, 64 SO, 72.2 IP) and junior LHP Zach Toney (6-2, 4.33 ERA, 67 SO, 72.2 IP).

    Relief Pitching

    Georgia Tech - Tech's closer is sophomore RHP Luke Bard. Bard is 2-2 with 8 saves and a 2.98 ERA. Also look for them to use freshman RHP Dusty Isaacs (1-1, 0 S, 2.75 ERA), senior RHP Kevin Jacob (0-1, 0 S, 2.40 ERA) and freshman RHP DeAndre Smelter (2-0, 0 S, 0.00 ERA).

    Southern Miss - Southern's closer is fifth-year senior RHP Collin Cargill who is 6-4 with 8 saves and a 1.05 ERA. They also use junior RHP Chase Horn in relief quite a bit. Horn is 2-0 with 3 saves and a 4.21 ERA. Also look for sophomore LHP Dillon Day to appear in relief. Day is 1-2 with 1 save and a 5.06 ERA.

    Mississippi State - Junior RHP Caleb Reed is MSU's closer. He is 0-1 with a 1.48 ERA and 11 saves. MSU will also likely use freshman RHP Taylor Stark (3-0, 3.12 ERA, 2 Saves), junior LHP Tim Statz (0-1, 4.64 ERA, 0 S), junior RHP Devin Jones (2-5, 4.45 ERA, 0 S) and freshman RHP Daryl Norris (2-0, 2.59 ERA, 1 S).

    Austin Peay - Senior RHP Ryne Harper is Austin Peay's closer. Harper is 6-2 with 8 saves and a 4.06 ERA. Also used a lot in relief is redshirt junior Mike Hebert who has a 2-1 record, 2 saves and a 3.63 ERA in 31 appearances. Junior RHP Chuck Edlin has appeared in 23 games and has a 3-0 record 0 saves and a 4.82 ERA.

    Georgia Tech - Georgia Tech is led at the plate by sophomore Brandon Thomas who is hitting .400 (6-for-15, 0 RBI), followed by junior Jake Davies who is hitting .375 (6-for-16, 2 RBI) and junior Matt Skole who comes in at .318 (7-for-22, 5 RBI.
