Jason Coats: It is a great honor. I've always wanted to be drafted and pursue a professional career.
ITO: Talk about your game a bit. What type of player are you and how do you see yourself fitting in with the Orioles?
Coats: I'm an outfielder and a hitter that can hopefully drive in a lot of runs and have an impact with solid defense.
ITO: What are your strengths and weaknesses as a player?
Coats: My strengths are hitting and understanding of the game. My weaknesses-I'm a little small but hopefully I can gain a little weight on my way through the system.
ITO: How about your defensive game?
Coats: It's good. I'm sold on defense and make the necessary plays in corner
ITO: Who would you compare yourself to at the Major League level so Orioles fans have an idea of what your game is like?
Coats: I'd say Jason Bay for the Mets. We have pretty similar games.
ITO: Were you expecting to be drafted by the Orioles or were you surprised?
Coats: They had been in contact a couple times before the draft. Them and a couple other teams were in contact. I was surprised but a good feeling just to be drafted.
ITO: Do you see yourself staying at the same position you play or do you think you will be moved to another one?
Coats: I think I'll play left field probably.
ITO: What would you say is your best moment in baseball and why?
Coats: Last year, making it to the College World Series and playing in the stadium for its last year. It was cool playing in front of all the fans.
ITO: Who was your favorite team and player growing up?
Coats: It was the Rangers because I grew up 45 minutes from the stadium and my dad took me to a lot of games. I'm a fan of the whole majors. I'm not in love with one team.
ITO: What are your immediate plans now that you have been drafted? Is your intention to sign now and start your professional career immediately?
Coats: I don't know. I'll have to sit down with my parents. It's a good honor but we have to see what's best for me.
