CHOCTAW, Miss. - Incoming Mississippi State freshman Ally McDonald took home the Mississippi Women's Golf Amateur Championship Friday at the Dancing Rabbit Golf Club at the Pearl River Resort in Choctaw, Miss.
McDonald cruised into the quarterfinals on Wednesday where she defeated current Arkansas Razorback Megan Roberts 4 and 3, then moved past Lady Bulldog Mary Langdon Gallagher with a 4 and 2 victory. McDonald beat the 2009 Mississippi Women's Golf Amateur Champion Virginia Grimes 1 up in the finals.
McDonald is the second-consecutive Lady Bulldog to win the honor after Gallagher claimed the 2010 Mississippi Women's Golf Amateur Championship.
"I am thrilled with Ally's performance," MSU coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. "It is the second year an incoming Mississippi State athlete has won the Mississippi State Amateur. It's a testament to the strength our recruiting efforts and a glimpse at the future strength of our program here at State."
After inking her commitment to be a Lady Bulldog during the fall, McDonald became the first female Mississippi high school golfer to earn state champion honors competing in the boys' division in May.
