MSU Signee Brandon Woodruff Update

Tupelo 49ers right-handed pitcher Brandon Woodruff, a Mississippi State signee, led his team to an 8-1 victory over Florence (AL) Post No. 11 American Legion team Friday night, July 1, 2011.

Below is an inning by inning account of how Brandon Woodruff performed:

1st Inning:

Brandon needed just 8 pitches (5 of which were strikes) to retire the side in order. He struck out one while also recording 1 groundout and 1 flyout. His moving two-seam fastball was consistently 90-91 mph. His one strikeout was on a 75 mph changeup. He allowed no runs, hits or walks.

2nd Inning:

Brandon needed 13 pitches (9 for strikes) to strike out the side in the second. He used his slider and changeup to record the three strike outs. After throwing mostly fastballs in the 1st inning, 7 of the 13 pitches he threw in this inning were off-speed pitches. His fastball was consistently 89-90 mph. Once again, he allowed no runs, hits or walks.

3rd Inning:

In the third inning, Brandon threw 16 pitches (12 for strikes) to once again strike out 3. He did allow his first baserunner this inning, allowing 1 walk. His fastball was consistently 87-89. He went back to throwing mostly fastballs in this inning, with 12 of his 16 pitches being fastballs. Through 3 innings, he has recorded 7 Ks, 5 of which were on his off-speed pitches. He allowed no runs, no hits and 1 walk in the inning.

4th Inning:

In the fourth, Brandon only needed 9 pitches (all strikes) to retire the side on two groundouts and 1 K. His fastball was consistently 89-90 mph. He threw 7 off-speed pitched in the inning. He allowed no runs, hits or walks.

5th Inning:

Brandon threw 15 pitches (11 for strikes) in the 5th. Of his 15 pitches, 11 were off-speed (8 for strikes) His moving two-seam fastball was 89-90 mph. He allowed 1 run on 2 hits in the innings, the first run and hits of the game.

6th Inning:

Brandon threw 14 pitches (10 for strikes) in the 6th inning, retiring the side on 1 strikeout and 2 groundouts. He split the pitches up with 7 being fastballs and 7 off-speed pitches. His fastball was consistently in the 90-92 mph range during the inning. This was his last inning of the game due to him being on a pitch count of 75 pitches.

Game Recap:

Brandon threw a total of 75 pitches, 56 strikes (75%) and 19 balls (25%). Of his 56 strikes, 21 were called strikes and 13 were swing and misses. He walked one batter and got to a three-ball count only one other time during the game.

His fastball was consistently 89-90, topping out at 92, during 5 of his 6 innings. He consistently threw it 87-89 mph in the 3rd. His changeup, a pitch he is now throwing more during the summer due to being more comfortable with it, was in the 75 mph range while his slider was in the 74-76 mph range.
