MSU Signee Will Cox Scouting Report

Tupelo 49ers right-handed pitcher Will Cox, a Mississippi State signee, led his team to an 6-5 victory over the South Stars team Saturday night, July 2, 2011.

Below is an inning by inning account of how Will Cox performed:

1st Inning:

Will threw 18 pitches, 12 for strikes. He struck out two while giving up no runs on two hits in the inning. His moving two-seam fastball velocity was consistently 87-90. His two strikeouts were on a changeup and a fastball.

2nd Inning:

Will had a quick 2nd inning, retiring the side on 8 pitches, 6 for strikes. His fastball was 88-89. He recorded 1 strikeout in the inning. 4 of his pitches were fastballs and 4 were off-speed pitches.

3rd Inning:

Will struggled with his command in the third, throwing 30 pitches, 15 for strikes. His fastball was 86-88. Although he gave up two walks and an infield hit, he didn't allow a run in the inning. He struck out two.

4th Inning:

After throwing 30 pitches the previous inning, Will came back and only threw 12 pitches (9 for strikes) in the 4th, retiring the side on two strikeouts and a groundout. His fastball was 86-87 mph.

5th Inning:

Will threw 18 pitches, 12 for strikes, before being taken out of the game after reaching a predetermined pitch count for the game. His fastball velo was 85-86 in the inning. He struck out two while walking one.

Game Recap:

Will threw a total of 86 pitches, 52 strikes (60%) and 34 balls (40%).

His fastball was consistently 87-89, topping out at 90, during the first couple of innings. During the 3rd and 4th innings he was consistently throwing it in the 86-88 range.

Of his 14 outs, 9 were strikeouts, 3 were groundouts, 1 was a flyout and 1 was a base runner thrown out trying to steal.

Of his 9 strikeouts, 3 were with his fastball, 2 were with his changeup and the other 4 were with his slider.

He allowed 0 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 9 in his 4.2 inning outing.
