2013 RHP Kyle Zurak Update

Williamsville North High School (Williamsville, NY) 2013 right-handed pitcher Kyle Zurak (6-1, 180) talks one-on-one with Gene's Page about his strengths as a pitcher as well as recruiting.

Kyle Zurak Profile:

What are your strengths as a pitcher?
"I place my fastball really well. I can also throw my curveball and slider well, which allows me to make the hitters guess a lot as to what I am going to throw to them."

What is the normal and top velocity of your fastball?
"My normal is about 85 and I've topped out at 87-88."

How much velocity did you add since a season ago?
"I would say about 3 or 4 miles per hour due to working out and working on my mechanics at the local baseball gym, which really specializes in baseball, and working out at my school gym."

What camps have you attended?
"Mississippi State is the only camp that I have gone to this year. But in the past I have gone to the University of Canisius in Buffalo and the University of Buffalo as well."

You are from New York state. How did you wind up at the Mississippi State camp this past weekend?
"My brother is a graduate of Mississippi State. I believe he graduated last year. He and I have been talking about it. And all throughout the years I have gone to football, basketball and baseball games at Mississippi State. Baseball has been a lot of fun. Everybody is really into the games. And I have always loved baseball because it is one of the main sports that I play in high school."

What was your experience like at the Mississippi State camp?
"I met all the coaches but I was mainly with Drew Hollinghead, a player who graduated from there a couple of years ago. I got to meet Coach (Butch) Thompson, Coach (John) Cohen, Coach (Nick) Mingione and all the coaches. I met (current players) Caleb Reed and C.C. Watson who were both there (working the camp).

"The first night we had a bullpen and they videotaped it. Then, the next day they broke it down for us in slow motion. That was a cool experience because we got to go into the locker room and do that. After we were done they filled out our evaluation chart on how well we did. And I got almost all very goods from my station coach (Drew Hollinghead)."

Do you play for a summer travel team? If so, who is the team?
"I play for the A-Turf Titans. The company that sponsors it supplies the turf for the Buffalo Bills football team. It's called a showcase team. I'm one of the younger kids on the team. My team is mainly made up of guys who will be seniors in the fall. I'm one of just five kids who will be juniors in the fall."

I know it's early in the recruiting process for you since you are just now going into your junior season, but what teams have contacted you about coming to their camps and showcases?
"I've been asked to go to camps from the University of Buffalo, Canisius University, East Carolina, the University of Maine, Stony Brook University, Kentucky, North Florida, Hartford, Mississippi State, Campbell, Belmont, Florida Gulf Coast, Ole Miss and Coastal Carolina."

Are there some schools that you are more interested in than some others?
"Mississippi State is close to my heart due to my brother and I've been there a lot but East Carolina is a very cool school, too. Ole Miss is good, too, although they are the arch rival (laugh). Also, Coastal Carolina looks good. They are an up and coming school. I like how they handle things there."
