MSU Signee Gavin Ware Update

Mississippi State men's basketball signee Gavin Ware talks about playing in the MS-AL All-Star Basketball Game and the retirement of MSU head coach Rick Stansbury.

  • Name: Gavin Ware
  • Classification: 2012
  • High School: Starkville (MS) HS
  • Position: Center/Forward
  • HT: 6-8, WT: 230
  • Ranking: 4-Star
  • Schools Of Interest: Signed with Mississippi State

  • Ware, a four-star recruit who is one of the top centers in the class of 2012, was selected to play in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Basketball Game. He talked about being selected to that elite team.

"This is a good experience, and it's an honor to be here," said Ware. "It shows you that all your hard work has paid off. You get to play with a good group of guys. I've played with (all-star teammates) Devonta (Pollard), Fred (Thomas), Chris (Bilbo) and Avery (Woodson) before (in AAU ball). We also get to travel to another state and play against another group of all-stars."

With the all-star game behind him, he now looks forward to playing ball on the college level. He signed with Mississippi State during the early signing period. Since then, Mississippi State head basketball coach Rick Stansbury has retired. Ware talked about how that affects him personally.

"He recruited me since the 9th or 10th grade," said Ware, referring to Stansbury recruiting him. "He recruited me since the start, when no one else was showing interest in me.

"When there was talk about firing him, I thought that would pass over. Then, when he started talking about retirement I was like, no, don't do that. Just wait a couple of years after I've been there. If he left then, I would already be there and I could work it out."

As for whether he sticks with Mississippi State or possibly asks for a release, Ware is taking a wait and see approach.

"It doesn't necessarily have a strong impact but it plays somewhere in there," said the youngster. "I told my coach and my father we just need to wait it out and see who they hire, see who they bring in as a new coaching staff. I'm just going to wait it out and see what the opportunities are. If they bring in a new guy and I like him I most definitely will stay. If I don't like the way he plays, then most likely I will have to be released and find another school. But most likely, I will be staying with State."
