East Mississippi Community College head basketball coach Mark White talks about sophomore forward Colin Borchert.
When is Colin officially visiting Mississippi State?
"He is coming in Sunday."
When did Mississippi State start recruiting Colin?
"Mississippi State came down in the spring of last year and watched Colin. Then, Coach Brooks came back over in late November and watched us play a game over at Shelton State. At that time, they were looking for the best fit. They were also interested in Colin but they just didn't know how he fit in with everything. Then, when Coach (Rick) Ray got the job George (Brooks) called me that day and wanted to see if they could really get involved with Colin. That's how it came about. And they've done a really good job showing us how serious they are about him."
They have already offered him, haven't they?
"Yes, they have. They offered Colin last week."
Who else has he visited?
"The first visit he made was to South Alabama with D.J. Evans, our point guard. Then, he visited Xavier, then Georgetown. He actually visited Georgetown Monday and Tuesday of this week and came back Wednesday. I talked to LSU's new coach Johnny Jones Sunday and he has really tried hard to get Colin to visit."
Do you have any idea when Colin will make his decision?
"I think he will make his decision either Monday or Tuesday when he gets back (from his Mississippi State visit)."
Describe Colin as a basketball player?
"He has a really, really high skill level. He has great versatility. He actually made the most three-pointers on our team this year. At 6-8 and him playing the four for us, for him to make the most three-pointers says a lot about his skill level. He can really shoot the ball. He is also a tremendous passer and he has a great feel for the game. And he's a lot more athletic than people realize. When people see him for the first time they are amazed how athletic he is. I know Coach Ray really feels that he can fit in really well with their system of a motion offense."
How is he as a person?
"He has been good. He came down here from Phoenix, Arizona and has done well. He came here in January of 2011 and didn't go back home until Christmas (2011). To be away from home in a totally different environment, it says a lot about him. And with the school he decides to sign with, he's not going to go from here back home to that school. He's going from here to that school for the first part of the summer. He wants to get into the weight room and get into shape."
[As a high school senior, Colin had offers from Southern Cal, Nebraska, UNLV and California. He committed to Southern Cal but failed to quality.]
