Elbert Shumake Update

Find out what Mississippi junior college player Elbert Shumake (GCCC) had to say about his recruitment.

Elbert Shumake is a 6-foot-3 and 260 pound defensive end who plays for Gulf Coast (MS) CC. . During his prep career, he played for Moss Point High School and Gautier High School. He transferred to Moss Point HS from Gautier HS between his junior and senior seasons.

Since his senior season in high school, he has growned from 220 pounds to 260 pounds. Even with that additional weight, he remained fast, running a 4.8 forty. Elbert told me he will get his speed down even lower.

Academically eligible out of high school, Elbert signed with Alcorn but decide to go the junior college route because he wanted to play for a bigger school.

During his freshman season at GCCC, he had 48 tackles, including 9 sacks.

During the spring evaluation period, Elbert told me that he, "received a call from West Virginia."

Elbert has received letters from numerous colleges, including Mississippi State, Memphis, Arkansas, LSU, North Carolina State, Boise State, Nebraska and Central Florida. Elbert said, "Central Florida has written a whole lot."

Elbert, a very intelligent kid who will graduate in December, told me he is interested in a lot of schools and conferences.

"I am wide open right now," said Elbert. "I like Central Florida. I like (Mississippi) State. I was real impressed with Mississippi State. The (2003) spring game was the first time that I had seen their campus. I like USM, Arkansas and Memphis. Really, I like almost all of the SEC, ACC and Conference USA schools."
