Although just a freshman at the time, offensive tackle Javon Patterson started on the 6A state championship game winner Petal High School team and performed well. That's not an easy feat for a freshman but Javon, based on what college coaches are telling him this summer while attending college camps, is not your typical freshman.
"The (Mississippi State coaches) said they liked my footwork," said Javon, who camped at Mississippi State in June. "They said I have great feet."
The Ole Miss coaches, who also saw him at one of their camps this summer, were just as impressed.
"I also went to the Ole Miss camp and their coaches said the same thing, that they like my (quick) feet," said Javon, who not only has quick feet but is already 6-foot-3.5 and 280 pounds.
Both coaching staffs appear to now have Javon on their recruiting radar screen.
"Both Ole Miss and Mississippi State (coaching staffs) said they would be following me (during the next three years)," said Javon.
Another in-state school will be recruiting him as well.
"I've also been to Southern Miss, although not to a camp," said Javon. "(Their coaches) said they are interested in me, too."
